Hi Chris, 

I am thinking it would probably be easier and better if I just made a site
visit...;)

command should look something like this:

cat us008_gf084_01091000_YxQCx | dcgrib2 -v 1 YYYYMMDDHH_eta211.gem

Since you are doing this as ldm the GEMTBL variable should be set, and
from the description over the phone, it sounds as if it was accessing all
the appropriate tables..

I suspect you were not including the YYYMMDDHH_blah to the end of your
argument.
