Actually I believe you will need to make one more change. If you logout of awips user (or whichever user you are running CAVE with). And then before logging in, click on the user and select the gear/settings icon. If you have a "Wayland display" selected then that's your issue. Select a "X11 display" and then login and you should be able to run CAVE. To change the default display, you can edit the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file and Uncomment the WaylandEnable line: WaylandEnable=false and then reboot.
